THE WARDROBE: PRIMARY COLOURS
...like a grown-up!
I know that I promised to cover jelly shoes in The Wardrobe, and don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten! However, sometimes an obsession strikes with such fervor that a writer has no choice but to change her course—and her clothing—with haste. I’ve always hated primary colours. I remember feeling physically ill in elementary school art class when we were made to paint large circles of red, yellow, and blue on our colour charts. Who would ever put these three together when they all clearly paired better with pink, cream, or silver?! I have since come to realise that not everyone has the same sort of visceral responses to colour, but I have maintained my stance on primary hues for the past twenty or so years.
In April, however, a change occurred. It was barely imperceptible at first, like a canary-petaled daffodil wiggling its way through winter’s soil. I bought myself a pair of race car red Miu Miu sunglasses in anticipation of summer. I swapped out some old clothing at Beacon’s Closet and returned home with a lemon-sleeved baseball t-shirt. I pulled an aqua-hued leather skirt from the depths of my closet. Suddenly everything was coming up primary.
