TRIMMINGS: SUMMER THINGS!
The colour orange, red sunglasses, pink tote bags.
Remember Lula Magazine? (If you’re reading this newsletter, I think it’s safe to assume that you do). Remember how in each issue they’d have a little section with Polaroids of the ‘Lula Loves’ for the month? I miss that, so I’m bringing it here to TRIMMINGS! Every season or so, I deliver you some Polaroids of things I love and ideas for the days ahead. (Here’s SPRING THINGS and last summer’s SUMMER THINGS, in case you missed them).
Clockwise from top left:
Miu Miu Ivresse sunglasses. I wanted to put these sunglasses in SPRING THINGS, but I was hesitant because they had just entered my wardrobe and they are—objectively—totally overpriced sunglasses. However, I can now attest that they are just the f*ing best! They’re a reissue of a 2005 style from the brand (a detail thoughtfully stamped inside the sunglasses), and they are perfect from the race car-red colour to the sporty-unibrow shape. They are sleek and contemporary but somehow don’t clash with my vintage pieces at all. They have that magic of making even the oldest and blandest items in your closet feel totally fresh again. As for the price? I’ve worn them every day since May, so we’re down to pennies per wear at this point…
The colour orange. I have a famously tempestuous relationship with orange. I can chalk my current obsession up to only one thing: the Knicks. After their big win (which I obviously did not watch but celebrated nonetheless—hate sports, can’t resist a party), it was as if the rods and cones in my eyes had been hyper-sensitised to orange. Sure, everyone was wearing their Knicks jerseys, but I found myself spotting orange cars, orange hair ties, and orange M&Ms with alacrity, and my heart warmed to the colour. It’s juicy, evokes sunsets, and looks great with pink and purple. It’s happy. I love it…for now.
Havaianas flip flops. Often imitated, never duplicated. There is nothing more comfortable or cuter than a Havaianas flip flop, and I literally wait all year to get mine out! And they’re always under $40. If you buy a simple flip flop (ahem, The Row) for a dollar more than that, you’re a chump. Sorry.
Valiese tote bag. I’ve sung the praises of the Valiese tote bag on here before, and I’ve been using it even more this summer than the two prior. The ultra-thick organic cotton breaks in beautifully, but the bag is still stiff enough to prevent all my stuff from spilling out under the airplane seat. It’s perfect for vacations and travel, but I’ve also been carrying it all the time at home. It’s a nice foil to fancy dresses and skirts, and the designers really nailed the strap length—I can comfortably fill it with groceries and wander around all afternoon. I’m really excited to say that we are now stocking Valiese at Mess! They’ll be here soon in bright pink and very special exclusive colourway that I’m so excited about.
