Hi! Welcome back to TRIMMINGS!, a free send that goes out every Friday where I share the fashion history fixations that I have at any given moment, contemporary fashion news, and the occasional impassioned recommendation. I know that these have been sporadic for the past few weeks, but, as they say, we’re back, baby.
I’ll always be the first person to remind you that summer lasts through the Autumnal Equinox (September 22nd this year), but I’d be a liar if I said that I hadn’t started thinking about fall clothes. Namely, I’m fixated on this Prada combination of a sequin slip with a ratty old fur stole. My friend Jensen posted pictures of the full look in the store on her fabulous Miuccia-themed Substack, and I have been unable to cast it from my mind since. A fur coat with a slip is a classic Prada trope, and I love the way it’s been reimagined for this season. This is one of those great designer looks that can be put together on a shoestring budget—in fact, it very much reminds me of how I used to dress in high school, which is probably why I find it so compelling. All you need is a sequin shift (needn’t even be a slip, I think long sleeves would work great here too), a granny’s fur collar or a shred of Mongolian sheepskin for your neck, black socks, and clomp-y shoes. To the thrift store I go! This is what I’ll want to be wearing once there’s even a whisper of a chill in the air.

Speaking of the F-word (fall), who makes the perfect pair of simple black boots?! It’s about this time every year that I realise I don’t have any, then I promptly forget until I’m ankle-deep in rain a few months later. I’m really close to pressing order on these (classic, made in the USA, good price), especially now that I’ve realised they’re the ones Kate Moss traipsed around in throughout the mid-aughts. I’m worried they read too Western, but if it’s good enough for Mossy, it’s good enough for me, right?

And for those of us very much still in the summer forever mindset: Margherita Missoni’s (relatively) new Substack is an Italian holiday of a treat every week.

Ssense has filed for bankruptcy protection. I could (and probably should) write a whole piece about the damage Ssense has done to the retail ecosystem and to the young designers they stock, but for the time being: yikes! The company is citing tariffs as the biggest threat to their business right now, which is undoubtedly true, but I also suspect that something has been amiss at Ssense HQ for awhile now. A sale that feels to good to be true…is always too good to be true.

Unrelated to fashion but integral to life’s beauty: we went to a peach farm this week and ate peaches still warm from the sun straight off the tree. Just a suggestion, but, if you can, I think you should do this too before summer ends. Fleeting, sweet, better than apple picking!
Much love & looking forward to chatting more regularly on here again!

RUBY ✨I am THRILLED you got some inspiration from my trip to the Prada store. I’ve also been recreating this (and other things I saw, you’ll like these too…) I’m so excited to see how it looks through your lens.
I’m also in the same boat as you on a fall shoe. Last year I just gave up and wore a croc boot around -LOL. Simone Rocha did deck this boot out tho, so, fashion?
