In my move to Substack, I’ve been toying around with whether or not it makes sense to keep content divided into segments, and guess what? I think it does! Welcome back to The Wardrobe, a place where we get dressed.
My first daughter was born three years ago, and while I maintain that becoming a parent hasn’t really changed my style, it would be untrue to say that there aren’t certain things that have felt wrong to wear as of late. Well, it’s two things in particular: bloomers and overalls. These items were staples in my pre-baby life, but they also happen to be two articles of clothing that my children wear all of the time. And as much as I love a coordinating family look, I try to be super cautious about not infantilising myself too much, otherwise things start to look… creepy.
But I miss my overalls! They’re practical, they’re comfortable, and they’re fun to wear…so I thought that this spring might be my time to revisit the trusty dungaree. (It’s perfect timing. Overalls aren’t really good in winter–they just look like an unflattering pair of pants when poking out from a coat and, in my many years of experience, feel suffocating with a heavy sweater buckled beneath them).
On the first warm day of the season, I bought a wonderfully worn-in and patched pair of overalls at Distressed Fest (from a vendor who told me he had fished them from an abandoned trailer he saw on a farm whilst returning a lost cow, no less). I’ve since worn my overalls weekly with the express intent of styling them like a grown-up. My key takeaways:
