My husband and I are opening a store (!!!) which is understandably taking up a lot of my time as of late. MESS will open in New York this fall, and to say that we are excited to share it with you would be the understatement of the century.
I’ll be taking two weeks off now for a much-needed holiday in Greece, but in the meantime I’ve programmed some really fun stuff to go live on here in my absence! A mini travel-themed series will feature the truth about what stylish people really wear to the airport and my Holy Grail of a packing guide. Once I’m back, we’ve got outfit dispatches and interviews from Copenhagen Fashion Week, reflections on 30 years of getting dressed, summer DIY ideas, and the history of the banana skirt. All this is to say, thank you so much for sticking around during a time of relatively inconsistent sends, and I can’t wait to show you everything that I have been working on.
I went out last week wearing something that I had thought up months prior and jotted down for a future warm day: a silver sequin top, red surf shorts, ropy flip flops, and a studded suede bag. I was enjoying the rare bliss of an outfit that translated perfectly from paper to reality, listening to my paillettes jingle as I made my way downtown. The sun was hanging low and orange in the sky, a whole night of freedom unfurled before me as I moved across the warm pavement. I sent a picture to my friend Bjorn, who has a real knack for putting words to seemingly ephemeral vibes, and she immediately responded: ‘SURFER SEX DUST’. I was searching for a name for my summer theme, encapsulated and embodied by this perfect outfit, and it had been delivered.
